How I made my August Layout - Netting I

One of my Design Team layouts for the August Challenge.

This is my daughter Catherine dressed as a teacher for Victorian Day at school in 1999.

Here is a reminder of the original layout was created by 2 Dogs, chosen by the DT for this month's challenge.

This is our sketch

I used Kaiser Craft papers from Charlotte's Dream Collection - Vision and Die Cut.

I also used some die cuts from the Charlotte's Dream Collectables.

The Die cut sheet was distressed and inked before being stuck down to a piece for Fuzzy Peach Kaiser Craft cardstock.

A 5" circle cut from Vision was distressed, inked and edged with lace. I stuck this to the right of the layout and mounted my photo onto it.

I cut a 4" circle from cardstock and mounted it onto a small doily, both were inked.

This was then trimmed with a strip of pleated gold netting, and attached to the left of the bigger circle.

I decorated with paper flowers from Kaiser Craft and Wild Orchid Crafts.

The date and 'Catherine' were spelt out with Kaiser Craft Charlotte's Dream Stickers.

I cut the sign from scraps of Bazzil and using a Sizzix die. These were heavily inked and I added eyelets to the holes. I hung the sign from the hanger with some cord then stuck to the layout with 3D foam pads. The word 'Teacher' is made with Thickers letter stickers from American Crafts.

I added some gem swirls and some decorative brads.

How I Made My January Page

This is the double page I made for the 'T is for Texture' January challenge. I used photos of my family from Christmas 1998. Because the colours were so mixed I changed them all to sepia before printing them out.

This month we are scraplifting a layout by Stacey Hansen, called Life's a highway, from September 2011 Creating Keepsakes Magazine. We are challenging you to use lots of texture (or lumpy bits), make a double layout and lots of photographs.

Creative Memories Large Circle Template

Technique Tuesday Cardstock Fundamentals

The patterned papers are American Crafts Christmas Dear Lizzy collection, Twinkling Tree, Gracious Gifts, Garland Greetings and Poinsettia and Pine.

Here is what I did:

Use the two pieces of red cardstock as a base for the double layout.

Cut two pieces of diagonal red white and green stripe, 4" x 12", use TT FUNdamental Postage Stamp template to draw pattern along the top of both pieces, just to mark where to cut, then using a small 5/8" circle punch cut notches in place.  Stick these to each piece of red about 2" up from the bottom so the pattern runs right across both pages, leave top unstuck to allow for tucking circle and bracket in place later.

Use a medium sized 'Swanky Frame' TT FUNdamental shape as a template. With Leapfrog cardstock cut half a frame following the outside edge of this shape. Cut a piece from holly paper using the inner frame as a guide. Mount the holly paper on top of the green, and tuck this under the diagonal striped paper on the right side of the layout to the right of this piece, about 3" down from the top. Trim where this overlaps the side of the layout.

Cut about 3/4 of a circle using the outer edge of the CM template and the fine stripe paper. Cut the inner circle from the dotted Swiss cardstock. Mount white over stripe and cut down the centre. Mount half of this shape on each side of the layout so they meet in the middle. See sketch for placement, but this is also about 3" down from the top. This is also tucked under the diagonal striped paper, and all is stuck down. (However I wanted a little spare red cardstock for making flowers, so I gutted some from under where the circle is going to sit before sticking all down for this purpose!).

I ran a wide red grosgrain ribbon with a white stitch effect across the bottom of the diagonal striped paper, then added a 5mm green satin ribbon on top of this, with a green bow to the left side of the left page.

I matted all my photos in white and arranged them across the layout as in the sketch (roughly).

Then I dusted off the QuicKutz, which has been neglected since I acquired my Cricut!  I got busy and cut 16 poinsettia petals and 16 leaves, arranging these in pairs to make 8 flowers. I curved the petals with the scissor blade and attached each pair together with a gold brad, these were added to the layout with a 3D foam pad. The leaves were added later, 2 to each flower. Then I cut lots of small tree bulbs and arranged in a garland along the top of the layout, each of these is raised on a tiny piece of 3D foam too.

Next I cut my title using Leapfrog cardstock and the Lucy Alphabet dies. I arranged these letters inside the white circle.

How I made my December page

I used American Craft, Dear Lizzy Christmas papers to create my page along with 2 sheets of Navy cardstock.

I decided to use the Merry Mistletoe paper as the base for my page.

I cut a large circle with my creative memories Cutter and red blade from the blue cardstock.

The filter paper I had was too small to fit this circle so, I folded it into a cone shape, cut a scallop in the top, then cut it in half and re-positioned it so it fitted the inner circle.

It looked too white so I used Adirondack paint daubers very lightly around the edge.

Once I had decided on the position on the page, I cut two edges square.

Using the same large circle cutter, I cut two circles using the red blade followed by the blue one to create a ring of the red paper, then reversed it so the patterned silver side was uppermost.

I cut some of the pale green paper to the same size and covered half the circle. Once the edges were all inked I put these over the filter paper and cut the same angles on two edges and fixed all layers to the page.

My main photograph is approx. 5x5” mounted with a thin border onto the navy cardstock, the smaller photos are approx. 3x2” trimmed and mounted too.

I placed them onto the page then cut and layered the poinsettias from the Merry Memories paper between them. Glossy accents and gold stickles have been used in the centres, I tucked another flower under the edge of the filter papers.

I drew some pencil lines onto the pale aqua area and wrote my journaling – only a few lines. The pencil lines are easily erased once the ink has dried fully.

A strip of white ribbon creates a border along the bottom of the page to which I added a thinner red ribbon, a 1” strip of the silver patterned paper was added beneath the white as it was too sheer.

I felt it needed a little “extra” so I stitched along the edge of the blue circle which I felt finished it off.

Our New Blog Header

Good morning crafty bloggers!

Hope you like the new header we have added to this blog. It was made with as many different products and techniques as possible. We hope that this reflects what this challenge blog is about - encouraging you to try out lots of new ideas and products by learning new techniques and introducing you to different designers each month.

Thought I would identify the different bits and pieces for you here, both for information and a bit of fun.

How I made my February Challenge page.

For this challenge I used BG Sugar Rush papers - Runts, Nerds and Gumdrops, plus some Petunia Bazzill.

I cut my paper into random sized strips and then used punches and decorative scissors to edge them.
After inking the edges I laid them onto the bazzill base and arranged them to overlap and finish at different widths. Once happy I stuck them down leaving the overhang, I trimmed this edge once all were in place.
I placed my photographs on the page then added some punched strips overlapping the photos.
I used some page elements for journalling, adding details and the date.

As I wanted this to be a double layout, I created a mirror image for the second side.
Once completed, I used a sharpie pen to add further notes to one photograph and drew 2 lines around the outside edge.
My title is some left over foam stickers (American Crafts) which I edged with the black sharpie for definition.

Random buttons were tied with DMC thread and stuck on.

How I made my January page

Here is how I made my double layout using the sketch we chose from Jana Eubank.

Linda and I both used a collection pack from My Mind's Eye called 'I Believe' available from Jill at Cardinal Colours. This kit contains 9 sheets of double-sided patterned paper, many of which can be used for non- Christmas layouts as well and seasonal papers. The papers have some glitter on them too. There is also a sheet of die cut card shapes.

I picked two sheets of 12"x12" Bazzill Bling cardstock in red, which I gutted to leave a frame of at least 1" around all four sides, this gave me spare card for mounting my photos later.

The polka dot paper was cut in two pieces measuring 5"x11" each.  These were mounted to leave half an inch of red cardstock showing at the top and in from both sides of the cardstock.

 Two pieces 6"x11" were cut from the thin stripe paper and these were mounted in the same way on the bottom of each page.

I cut the paper with trees and deer to 9"x12" and mounted them across both pages cutting down the centre vertically, and matching both halves back up before sticking down.

Then with diagonal red striped paper was cut into two pieces, both to measure 5.5"x11.5" and stuck them centrally across both pages.

I cut a narrow strip in green (approx. 10"x1" for left page and 12"x1" for the right) and trimmed them with the Martha Stewart holly border punch.  I added this along the bottom of the the diagonal stripe paper. I added a few dots of liquid Pearls in red for berries.

The journalling blocks were made by cutting one of the die cut shapes into two and adding half to each page. The Title is created with American Craft Thickers in glittery red. The small letter tiles are stickers left over from another layout. I added the journalling detail by hand, and decorated the blocks with red gems.

The three landscape photos were trimmed and mounted on red cardstock. The one 4"x6" portrait photo was mounted on mint paper leaving a wide border at the bottom. I attached ribbon and a charm.

Linda cut flowers from a sheet of patterned paper to make a seasonal wreath around the photos.

There was a lot of paper left after making the double layouts so we made mini albums too. We will share these with you later in the month.
